Manifesto, "The Struggle of the Human Identity" by Genevieve LaBeef
How can humans make something of themselves when seeing social standards from Media such as magazines, T.V, and ads every way we turn? You may be hearing this and think “I know who I am”, but think about it. Where do you get your individuality from? Look at: the clothes you’re wearing, your hairstyle, make-up, your nails, and even the people you surround yourself with. Do you still believe all of this was your own influence? Now think of the kind of shows you watch and media you follow, do the people there really seem realistic?
Now don’t feel bad if you’re not 100% your own self, how could you be? We are all social beings, therefore we have the natural instinct to look for inspiration. The idea is to only take in positive inspiration but that’s not always the case. This is why we must be able to be aware of those external forces knowing which ones are helping us find our true selves. Knowing yourself is most important, especially when fighting with exterior forces, such as media. Some of us may fall short when these powers are most forceful. It’s ok to want to be a part of something, but it is not ok to be corrupted by something just because it’s trendy.
How can one know the difference between corruption and something right for them? It’s great to be included in something that seems significant but it is not always the right choice. You’ll know when something is not right for you when it goes against yourself. The goal is to find your authentic self without manipulation. What do you stand for? It’s within you, right in your fingerprint. Your true identity.
Everyday, humans are struggling to see how they can be complete individuals. This may be against the desire of having support, but we must still understand that we have the power to dig deeper and be stronger selves. In doing so, we can have a united community full of stronger individuals which will in the end create a sturdy whole. This new found community will not be easily manipulated! This is essential because even as individuals we must know how to be untied for the sake of that good inspiration. Then, when knowing we maintain this ability, we can work together to create an even more powerful humankind.
